President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a nationwide security emergency in response to escalating insecurity across several regions of the country. The president issued the directive during a national address, announcing a major expansion of manpower across the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, and other security bodies.
Under the new order, the Nigeria Police Force will increase its recruitment intake to 50,000 officers. The Armed Forces have also been instructed to conduct accelerated recruitment to support ongoing operations nationwide. The directive includes the use of selected National Youth Service Corps camps as temporary training facilities to ensure faster processing and deployment.
Security personnel previously assigned to VIP protection are to be reassigned after undergoing crash-training and redeployed to high-risk areas. The government also authorised the Department of State Services to activate a structured deployment of trained forest guards and recruit additional personnel to dismantle criminal hideouts operating from forested regions.
The president maintained that the federal government would not allow criminal groups to retain any strategic advantage. He urged citizens to remain calm while asking communities to cooperate fully with security agencies. Tinubu also encouraged the National Assembly to review existing laws to support states that are willing to explore the creation of state-level police structures.
The declaration signals a shift toward a more aggressive and coordinated security strategy. Its impact will depend on efficient execution, inter-agency cooperation, and sustained monitoring as Nigeria moves to confront a worsening security landscape.
