Heirs Holdings has confirmed that employees of its organization were among those who lost their lives in the fire that engulfed Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos Island.

The tragedy occurred on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. Tony Elumelu, Chairman of Heirs Holdings, described the event as “devastating,” stating that no words can capture the magnitude of the loss. He cut short his trip abroad to return to Lagos in honour of the employees who passed away.

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), a tenant in the building, has officially confirmed the deaths of four of its senior staff: Mrs. Ekelikhostse George (Assistant Director), Mr. David Sunday-Jatto (Assistant Director), Mrs. Nkem Onyemelukwe (Senior Manager), and Mr. Peter Ifaranmaye (Manager). These staff worked in FIRS offices on the sixth and seventh floors of Afriland Towers.

Authorities say that seven people in total have been confirmed dead, including those from FIRS and other organizations housed in the building. Emergency services responded to the blaze, and investigations are ongoing to ascertain the cause of the fire. Heirs Holdings has pledged support to the families of the deceased and announced plans for a memorial service.
