The Lagos State Government has issued an appeal to residents to remain calm amid continuous heavy rainfall over the past 12 hours, which has heightened the risk of flash flooding in several areas.
In a statement shared by the Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Kunle Adeshina, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, noted that the state’s flood control infrastructure is in place to manage such situations, but he emphasized the need for public caution.
Recent weather advisories from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) forecast further heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over the next three days.
Wahab warned that some parts of Lagos may experience flash floods due to limitations in the drainage system’s ability to handle the current runoff
He explained that Lagos’s coastal geography makes it particularly vulnerable. Rising lagoon water levels can create tidal locks that block drainage outlet, exacerbating flood risk.
Residents in low-lying and waterfront areas were urged to remain vigilant. Wahab specifically advised against playing in rain or wading through floodwaters, and warned motorists and pedestrians against attempting to cross flooded roads due to the danger of being swept away.
He also condemned improper refuse disposal into drains, noting it can block water flow and worsen flooding. The government continues to focus on year-round drain cleaning and has initiated concrete lining of new channels to improve drainage resilience.
Emergency response teams remain on alert, and residents are encouraged to stay informed through official updates, prioritizing safety during this period of heightened rainfall.
