Several opposition political parties in Lagos State have jointly called for the cancellation of the recently concluded local government elections, alleging widespread irregularities and electoral malpractice.
The Labour Party (LP), Young Progressives Party (YPP), African Action Congress (AAC), Action People's Party (APP), Accord Party, and others, made this demand during a joint press briefing held in Lagos on Monday.
Speaking on behalf of the LP, Pastor Dayo Ekong, whose remarks were delivered by Deputy Chairman Mr. Olasupo Ajayi, described the election as a “systematic state-sponsored rape of democracy.” She alleged that the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) orchestrated a manipulated process to impose the ruling party’s will on voters.
“We utterly reject the fraudulent results declared by LASIEC,” she said. “We are compiling exhaustive evidence and will explore every legal and constitutional avenue available to challenge this electoral robbery.”
Echoing similar concerns, Mr. Olusegun Mobolaji of the YPP criticized the entire electoral process as flawed, citing delays in nomination forms and contradictory schedules.
APP Chairperson, Mrs. Abiola Adeyemi, also alleged intimidation, claiming she was nearly attacked in Badagry over the removal of her party’s logo from ballot papers.
The Accord Party Chairman, Mr. Dele Oladeji, accused LASIEC of acting as a partisan body, saying, “We contested against LASIEC, not each other. It was a systematic rigging orchestrated before election day.”
Meanwhile, the Forum of Lagos PDP Local Government Chairmen vowed to challenge the results in court. Forum Chairman Chief Adegboyega Adegbesan alleged that PDP strongholds were targeted with tactics such as ballot box stuffing and late delivery of materials.
“There was no election,” he declared. “It was a charade and a criminal conspiracy against the people’s sovereign will.”
