The Lagos State Government has intensified its clampdown on unsafe food practices with the shutdown of a shocking illegal abattoir hidden inside a private residence in Oko Oba, Agege.
Acting on a whistleblower’s tip, the Enforcement Squad of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, in collaboration with officers from Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), stormed the location on Succo Road, directly opposite the RRS Barracks and LASTMA Yard.
During the Wednesday raid, operatives uncovered individuals actively slaughtering cows and goats under unsanitary and unauthorized conditions, all intended for public consumption.
Authorities immediately confiscated large quantities of contaminated meat, halting its distribution into the Lagos food supply chain.
“This kind of blatant disregard for public health and sanitation will not be tolerated in Lagos State,” a spokesperson for the Ministry stated. “Every government’s primary responsibility is the protection of lives and property, and we will not shirk that responsibility.”
Officials emphasized that the illegal activity was in clear violation of the closure order previously placed on the Oko Oba Abattoir. The unauthorized slaughter operation posed significant health risks and serious environmental hazards to nearby residents.
The Ministry stressed that only certified and hygienic facilities are permitted to process and distribute meat within the state. It warned that unregulated meat handling threatens both public health and the structural integrity of Lagos's food system.
This operation is a part of the state’s ongoing “Cleaner Lagos, Greater Lagos Rising” initiative, a broader strategy to enforce public health, sanitation, and environmental laws across all communities.
Residents have been urged to remain alert and report any suspicious or illegal food-handling operations to the appropriate authorities.
