Toke Makinwa advises singles to stay true to their relationship standards and stop letting society dictate what’s acceptable. She says there’s no shame in knowing what you want.

Media personality and lifestyle entrepreneur Toke Makinwa has encouraged singles to remain firm in their relationship standards, urging them not to settle out of societal pressure or fear of judgment.

Speaking in a recent episode of her podcast, Toke Moments, Makinwa addressed the often controversial topic of preferences in relationships particularly regarding financial expectations. She argued that individuals have every right to seek partners who meet their personal values and desires, rather than feeling shamed for doing so.

“There’s no need to attack someone for wanting more,” Makinwa said. “If their standard doesn’t suit you, keep it moving. There are billions of people in the world.”

She pushed back against the trend of online criticism directed at people especially women who openly state what they want in a relationship, including financial support. According to Makinwa, labeling someone negatively for their preferences reflects more about the critic than the person being judged.

“If you say, ‘Oh, this girl is a money-hungry b!tch, all she wants is a man to pay her bills,’ well… if you can’t pay her bills, leave,” she stated. “There’s someone out there who matches what she’s looking for.”

Makinwa also spoke on the toxic culture of social media debates over relationship choices, suggesting that these arguments often stem from personal insecurities.

“We make things harder than they need to be with all the online fighting and opinions. If someone isn’t what you’re looking for, resist the urge to tear them down it’s not about them, it’s about you,” she said.

Highlighting self-confidence and personal autonomy, Makinwa encouraged listeners to respect others’ choices and focus on their own happiness. She emphasized that everyone has the right to want what they want and that they should unapologetically go after it.

“Some people wake up and believe they’re the best thing since sliced bread and if they believe it, who are you to tell them they’re not?” she added.
