Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announces emergency evacuation plans for citizens stranded in Israel and Iran due to escalating conflict, while calling for a peaceful resolution and reaffirming its commitment to citizen safety.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed that it is finalising emergency evacuation plans for Nigerian citizens currently stranded in Iran and Israel, following the recent escalation of hostilities between the two nations.

In a statement issued on Monday, June 17, 2025, by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government acknowledged the intensifying crisis and reassured citizens of its commitment to their safety and welfare. The ministry said it is working closely with Nigerian embassies in both Tel Aviv and Tehran to facilitate timely and secure evacuations.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform that following the escalation of the crisis between the State of Israel and Islamic Republic of Iran, the Federal Government is finalising arrangements for the emergency evacuation of stranded Nigerians in both countries,” the official statement read.

Ebienfa urged all affected Nigerians in the two countries to strictly adhere to local security advisories and to promptly contact the nearest Nigerian embassy or diplomatic mission for registration and further guidance. This includes the Nigerian Embassies in Tel Aviv and Tehran, which have reportedly been actively engaging with the Nigerian communities in their respective regions since the crisis began.

The Federal Government commended the efforts of both missions for their “dedication and commitment” to safeguarding Nigerian nationals during this period of unrest.

The current conflict between Iran and Israel has been marked by a series of retaliatory military actions over the past five days, with both countries launching missile and drone strikes. The situation has raised international concerns over regional stability and the safety of foreign nationals, including Nigerians, residing in the affected territories.

In addition to its evacuation efforts, Nigeria reiterated its diplomatic stance, calling for an immediate ceasefire and urging all parties to pursue dialogue as a means of resolving the conflict. The Ministry emphasized the importance of respecting international humanitarian law and prioritizing civilian protection.

“Nigeria stands firm in its support for the peaceful resolution of conflicts and reaffirms its longstanding commitment to regional and global peace and stability,” the statement concluded.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured the public that further updates regarding evacuation operations and safety measures will be communicated through official channels as the situation evolves.
