A Jos Area Court has sentenced a bus conductor, Aminu Tijjani, to three months in prison for stealing a pair of shoes valued at N15,000. The convict, who pleaded guilty, was also given an option of a N20,000 fine and ordered to pay N20,000 in compensation to the victim.

A Jos Area Court on Wednesday sentenced a bus conductor, Aminu Tijjani, to three months imprisonment for stealing a pair of shoes worth N15,000.

Presiding over the case, Judge Shawomi Bokkos handed down the sentence after Tijjani pleaded guilty to the charge of theft. The judge, however, offered the convict an option of a N20,000 fine in lieu of jail time.

In addition to the sentence, Tijjani was ordered to pay N20,000 in compensation to the complainant, Mr. Muktar Tasiu.

Earlier, the police prosecutor, Inspector Daniel Damulak, informed the court that the incident occurred on April 2 and was reported at the ‘C’ Division Police Station in Jos. According to Damulak, the defendant trespassed on the complainant’s property and stole the shoes.

During police investigation, Tijjani admitted to the crime, leading to his arraignment and eventual conviction.

The court’s decision highlights the ongoing effort to deter petty theft and uphold property rights, even in cases involving low-value items.
