The spotlight is on Lagos as it accelerates efforts to promote Adire, the iconic Yoruba indigo-resist textile, positioning it as a flagship African brand on the global stage.

The Lagos State Government is stepping up efforts to spotlight indigenous textiles and fashion on the international stage, as it continues to position itself as the cultural and creative heartbeat of Africa.

In a high-level engagement, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, hosted Her Majesty Queen Ronke Ademiluyi-Ogunwusi, founder of Africa Fashion Week London and Nigeria, alongside the British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Jonny Baxter.

The meeting, held in Lagos, focused on scaling the global appeal of Adire the traditional Yoruba resist-dyed fabric as both a powerful cultural symbol and a viable economic export. Adire, once confined to local markets, is now receiving international attention as a canvas of African identity and innovation.

Speaking during the meeting, Benson-Awoyinka reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting creative platforms that empower designers, preserve heritage, and contribute to Lagos’s growing creative economy.

“As the fashion and creative capital of Nigeria, Lagos remains a catalyst for innovation, style, and enterprise. We are proud to support initiatives that promote our cultural assets and inspire the next generation of creatives,” she stated.

She described the meeting as a significant step in the journey to globally promote Adire and other indigenous styles, underscoring Lagos’s dedication to cultural preservation, youth empowerment, and creative industry growth.

Also on the agenda was the upcoming 15th edition of Africa Fashion Week London, a milestone event celebrating African fashion excellence and one that Lagos is looking to support through stronger partnerships and brand visibility.

The gathering marks another stride in Lagos’s mission to fuse cultural authenticity with global appeal, leveraging platforms that celebrate African craftsmanship while creating economic opportunities for local artisans and fashion entrepreneurs.
