In a significant policy shift, Hashimu Argungu (Rtd), Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), announced on Tuesday that special promotions within the Nigeria Police Force have been officially abolished. This decision was revealed during a meeting with a delegation from the Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria.

According to Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations for the PSC, Argungu emphasized that future promotions will be based solely on merit, requiring officers to pass prescribed examinations and meet other essential criteria. He stated, “There is nothing like a special promotion anywhere around the world,” and assured that the Commission would not endorse such practices under his leadership.

While acknowledging that the law permits accelerated promotions for officers demonstrating exceptional skill and dedication, Argungu stressed the need for careful implementation to prevent potential abuses. He clarified that any officer who fails the promotion examination three times will be retired for incompetence.

Argungu, a former Deputy Inspector General of Police, expressed his unwavering commitment to the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force, stating, “A policeman is like Caesar’s wife and should be above suspicion; it is country first.” He reiterated his pride in the institution he served and vowed not to let it down.

The meeting also included remarks from AIG Paul Ochonu (Rtd), Chairman of the Association, who extended a hand of fellowship to the PSC and pledged loyalty to its leadership. He noted the hope for a collaborative working relationship with the Inspector General of Police, especially with former police officers in key security positions.

This announcement marks a pivotal moment for the Nigeria Police Force, as it moves towards a more merit-based promotion system aimed at enhancing professionalism and accountability within the ranks.
