3 Things Every Corps Member Should Know Before Choosing a PPA

Choosing your PPA? These are three things you must do.

Securing a Place of Primary Assignment (PPA) is one of the major steps after NYSC camp. But beyond finding a place to serve, have you considered how your PPA can contribute to your future career?

Before you apply to that company everyone is talking about, here are three things you should consider.

1. Know What You Want

It is easy to apply to a company because it is popular or because many other corps members want to work there. However, what works for someone else may not be the best choice for you.

Think about your career goals and the skills you want to develop. Do you want to gain practical experience in your field, learn something new, build professional connections, or explore a different career path?

Understanding what you want will help you choose a PPA that offers opportunities relevant to your goals.

2. Update Your CV

Before sending out applications, take another look at your CV. Do not rely on an old version that no longer reflects your current qualifications and experience.

Include relevant skills, certifications, projects, volunteering experience, and other achievements you have gained. Make sure your CV clearly presents what you can offer the organization.

Remember, your CV is often the first impression an employer has of you, so ensure it is accurate, updated, and tailored to the opportunity.

3. Research the Company

Before applying, take time to understand the organization. Find out what the company does, the services it offers, the roles it recruits for, and the kind of experience you could gain there.

Check its website and professional social media pages. If possible, speak with people who have worked there or are currently working there to learn about their experiences.

Researching a company helps you make informed decisions instead of choosing a PPA based on popularity alone.

Your PPA Is a Step towards Your Career

Your PPA is more than just a place to complete your NYSC service. It can be an opportunity to gain practical experience, develop valuable skills, build professional relationships, and prepare for life after service.

Be intentional about where you apply, and think about how each opportunity fits into your future.
