Former Naval Chief Awwal Gambo pays heartfelt tribute to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, calling him a disciplined patriot, principled leader, and enduring national icon.

Former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo (Rtd.), has described the passing of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, as a monumental national loss. Gambo, who served as Nigeria’s 21st indigenous naval chief from 2021 to 2023 under Buhari’s administration, paid a deeply personal tribute in a statement issued to Vanguard.

Reflecting on his relationship with the late President, Gambo described Buhari as a disciplined leader, a patriotic soldier, and a principled statesman who embodied integrity and public service.

“As a soldier, General Buhari stood tall with courage, unwavering discipline, and an incorruptible spirit. As a statesman and former Commander-in-Chief, he embodied the highest ideals of public service, personal sacrifice, and national commitment,” he said.

Gambo recalled with pride his appointment as Chief of Naval Staff by President Buhari, describing it as one of the greatest honors of his life. He also recounted Buhari’s final major military assignment—the Navy’s Presidential Fleet Review in Lagos, a symbolic moment of transformation in the Nigerian Navy under his leadership.

Describing Buhari as both a leader and father figure, Gambo praised the former President’s investment in military welfare, procurement of modern naval equipment, and support for service chiefs. He highlighted Buhari’s modest lifestyle and his unrelenting fight against corruption as core elements of his legacy.

Gambo also shared a personal anecdote about his mother’s admiration for Buhari, noting her joy when he was appointed naval chief and her visit to the former president after his exit from office.

“His family and Nigerians will find solace in the knowledge that he served his people with honor, left this world with dignity, and will forever be remembered as one of the most consequential leaders in our nation’s history,” Gambo stated, offering prayers for Buhari’s soul and condolences to the bereaved.
