In the early hours of May 29, 2025, the town of Mokwa in Niger State was overwhelmed by devastating floods following torrential rains and the collapse of a nearby dam. The disaster has claimed over 200 lives, with more than 500 individuals still missing and presumed dead. Entire neighborhoods, including Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa, were submerged, displacing thousands and destroying homes, farmlands, and critical infrastructure.

Among the heart-wrenching stories is that of Adamu Yusuf, a 36-year-old resident who lost nine family members, including his wife and newborn baby. "I watched helplessly as the floodwaters took them away," Yusuf recounted, his voice heavy with grief. He now survives with nothing but the clothes on his back, relying on the kindness of neighbors for support.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reports that over 3,000 homes have been affected, with significant damage to roads, bridges, schools, and healthcare facilities. The agricultural sector has also suffered, with thousands of hectares of farmland destroyed, threatening food security in the region.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed his condolences and pledged immediate relief efforts, including the provision of temporary shelters and essential supplies. However, the scale of the disaster underscores the urgent need for comprehensive flood management strategies and infrastructure improvements to prevent future tragedies.
