Makemation': Nigeria’s First AI-Themed Film Hits Cinemas

A groundbreaking Nollywood film about AI and a tech-savvy girl in rural Lagos is making waves at the box office.

Makemation is Africa's first feature film centered on artificial intelligence (AI), marking a significant milestone in Nigerian cinema. Produced by Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji and directed by Michael “AMA Psalmist” Akinrogunde, the film premiered in Nigerian cinemas on April 18, 2025, and garnered attention for its unique blend of technology and storytelling.

Set in rural Lagos, Makemation follows the journey of Zara Sodangi, a brilliant 17-year-old girl from a low-income background. Despite facing socioeconomic challenges, Zara gains admission to the prestigious Makemation Institute, Nigeria’s leading tech academy. There, she harnesses artificial intelligence to address pressing issues in education, healthcare, and food security, embodying the potential of youth-driven innovation in Africa.

The film features a star-studded cast, including Richard Mofe-Damijo, Shaffy Bello, Tomi Ojo, Yvonne Jegede, Tony Umez, and Jide Kosoko. The screenplay was co-written by Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji and Nengi Diri, with music composed by Tolu Obanro. The production was undertaken by Rise Interactive Studios and distributed by Nile Media Entertainment Group.

Makemation achieved significant commercial success, grossing ₦32.9 million within its first four days of release. By the end of its theatrical run on May 15, 2025, the film had amassed a total of ₦88.7 million, making it one of the top-grossing Nollywood films of the year. Critics praised the film for its innovative storytelling and its emphasis on STEM education and youth empowerment.

Beyond its domestic success, Makemation garnered international attention. It was showcased at the 2024 Global Artificial Intelligence Summit in Saudi Arabia and featured at Kenya Innovation Week in November 2024. The film was also presented to Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden during the UNDP AI Marketplace, highlighting its global relevance and appeal.

Makemation stands as a testament to the power of storytelling in addressing contemporary issues and inspiring the next generation of innovators.
