Popular Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson-Okojie has shared a deeply personal health journey, disclosing a past cancer scare that led to the surgical removal of her thyroid. The revelation came in a now-viral video where she was seen speaking with veteran actress Joke Silva.
Johnson-Okojie described the period as exceptionally challenging, particularly as her youngest child was merely six months old at the time of the health crisis. She recounted the difficult decision-making process with her husband as they navigated the diagnosis and the prospect of a life-altering surgery.
The actress further explained the significant implications of the surgery, stating that doctors informed her she would require lifelong medication, a treatment regimen accompanied by various side effects. "I had a cancer scare, and I had my thyroid removed. It was like a journey for us because we have kids, and my lastborn was six months old at that time, we [my husband and I] kept saying, we had to understand this is the new us, let’s get the surgery done," she shared.
She continued, detailing the post-operative realities: “When we got there, they said that I was going to be on medication for the rest of my life. We had to sit down, they were saying I can’t miss my medication, telling me the side effects. So, I’m reconciling with what you are saying [my weight loss]. I’m at the point where you realise that this is where we are, let’s grow from here and live in this comfort zone”.
Mercy Johnson-Okojie's candid disclosure sheds light on the often-private health struggles faced by public figures and serves as a testament to her resilience in adapting to significant life changes while balancing her career and family life.
